Lenny Abrahamson (Garage; What Richard Did, SFF
2013) returns with this hilarious and sometimes dark
comedy in which wannabe musician Jon (Domhnall
Gleeson) accidentally joins a creatively ambitious
pop group led by the enigmatic Frank (Michael
Fassbender) – who constantly wears a giant fake
head. Though lacking in songwriting skill himself,
Jon feels that he can lead the decidedly avant-garde
band in a more commercial direction. This makes
an adversary of Clara (Maggie Gyllenhaal), Frank’s
fiercely protective sidekick, who demands that the
fragile Frank is not placed under too much pressure.
Following an excruciatingly long album recording, the
band is invited to SXSW, where fame – and its pitfalls
– l ie ahead of them. The greatly talented Abrahamson
has created an eccentric and moving film about
music, illness and genius.

Director, Screenwriter: Louise Archambault | Producers: Kim
McCraw, Luc Déry | Cast: Gabrielle Marion-Rivard, Alexandre
Landry, Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin | Distributor: Sharmill Films
From the producers of Monsieur Lazhar, winner of
an Audience Award at SFF 2012, comes another
humanist drama that balances sentiment with
unflinching honesty and complex characters. Gabrielle,
a musically gifted woman with intellectual disability
(played by radiant newcomer Gabrielle Marion-Rivard
in a semi-autobiographical role) lives in a group home.
When she falls in love with Martin (Alexandre Landry),
a young man with a similar disability who sings in
her choir, she discovers that their families and social
workers have concerns. Can these two handle an
adult sexual relationship? Refusing to stereotype or
infantilise people with disabilities, this wonderful film
is an uplifting story about contemporary relationships.
Gabrielle won Best Film at this year’s Canadian Screen
Awards; and Marion-Rivard won Best Actress.

Cast: Stellan Skarsgård, Pål Sverre Hagen, Bruno Ganz |
Distributor: Madman Entertainment
In this wild, unpredictable, extremely violent and very
funny action comedy, Stellan Skarsgård goes on the
warpath and those in his way had better watch out.
Skarsgård plays Nils, who snowploughs the mountain
roads of Norway in winter, providing access for all. So
diligent is Nils that he is awarded Citizen of the Year.
When his son is murdered, Nils is determined to get
to the bottom of it and uncovers a trail leading to a
vegan drug-running gangster called ‘The Count’. Set
on revenge, and justice, Nils shows no mercy as he
makes his way to the top of the criminal food chain.
And soon the aged but brutal Serbian mafia boss
‘Papa’ (Bruno Ganz, Downfall) is amidst the action.
Director Han Petter Moland (A Somewhat Gentle
Man SFF 2010; Zero Kelvin, SFF 1996) keeps things
moving at a cracking pace and cold, hard revenge has
rarely been this laugh-out-loud funny.

Director, Screenwriter: Michel Gondry | Producers:
Georges Bermann, Michel Gondry, Julie Fong, Raffi Adlan |
Distributor: Rialto Distribution
In this filmed – and beautifully animated –
conversation, French cinematic visionary Michel
Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
meets the man tagged ‘the most important
thinker alive’ – philosopher, linguist and activist
Noam Chomsky. As one might expect, Gondry
does not take a standard talking-head approach.
Instead he populates the frame with brightly
coloured drawings to illustrate Chomsky’s
thinking, particularly on the emergence of
language and philosophy. The discussion ranges
from education to Hebrew culture and from
Galileo to astrology; it also touches on Chomsky’s
childhood and his relationship with his late
wife. This unlikely pairing of two distinctive
minds, crafted with verve and charisma, is an
unexpected visual and cerebral pleasure.
Few places put on a greater show than New Zealand. Feel crushingly
small cr uising other worldly Milford Sound, where rainforest-clad cliffs
soar nearly a mile high. Uncover Maori myths tucking into a traditional
hangi feast. Experience the thrill of kayaking past geothermal
vents before soaking in a thermal pool. Or savour the fruits of
New Zealand’s oldest wine-growing region, straight from the source.
Enjoy the show.
